The History Of Catterick
It started as a burial site in the Neolithic period as they needed a place to bury their dead.
It held a strategic position across the Swale and Dear street which was the roman original A1motorway. In Roman times it had shopping places and the best preserved bath house in the UK. It had a booming leather trade. We know about this from leather scraps found on site. A wooden bridge was built later then a stone one was discovered after it was excavated. A fertility symbol was also found there which was symbolic and meant good luck.
